Instructions for Peace Booklet: An A to Z Guide is a hybrid analog-digital Book Art piece by new media artist Fang-Yu Lin, and a lighthearted attempt at vernacular peace practices. Poking fun at the high-mindedness of the subject while subverting the cynicism of disbelievers, Fang-Yu creates 26 sets of ostensible instructions that anyone may follow to promote peace in his or her daily life. These humorous call-to-actions, one for each letter, are presented in the Booklet and accompanied by faux-naïf step by step guides and illustrations.
Evoking the image of children's book and ebook, the artwork consists of a printed booklet and an iPad app*. The app version includes a DIY Peace Collage feature that enables the user to create his or her own collage by entering a word and rearranging illustrations. Through this exercise, hateful languages become comical while noble concepts appear irreverent, further accentuating the artistic intention. Readers may also share their own instructions for peace in the booklet for the world to see.
The iPad app is available for free on iTunes App Store. To obtaining a copy of the print version, please contact the artist.
*Based on my research, this is the first ever Book Art piece of which iPad is the medium. Should you know of any prior art, I'd love to hear from you.Contributors:
