From the Great Beyond:
Internet as an Entity? Channeling the Net Through a Robotic Typewriter

This typewriter is your conduit to the virtuality, a medium that channels the invisible and intangible entity called the Internet. Is Internet geeky? Or is it a pervert? The audience may engage in conversation with the Net using the keyboard, and the typewriter is able to print out perhaps whimsical, maybe intelligent, or simply irrelevant responses to the viewer's inputs from the Internet in real-time.

All conversations, including textual exchanges and ASCII art prints, are archived on a vintage teletype paper roll. One thus can peruse the transcripts of others' dialogues with the Internet and decipher the characteristics of this being.

Born in Taiwan, Fang-Yu Lin is a New York-based new media artist and designer whose artwork reflects the interplay of human experience, culture and technology. His works have been exhibited in many venues, including Tate Online, Whitney Artport, Chelsea Art Museum, Felissimo Design House, and Bauhaus Dessau. He holds a MFA in Design & Technology and a MS in Information.

From the Great Beyond received an Honorary Mention in the 2005 Prix Ars Electronica Net Vision category.
